New Year, New Me

  • @Graeme For sure, after all, you canโ€˜t nomad everywhere at once! ๐Ÿ˜…

And let's be fair, the traveling part of traveling is balls. Today I spent 9 hours on a bus (London>Paris).

  • @mrdanielschwarz the big โ€œnew thingโ€ for me this year was exploring whatโ€™s possible with serverless, but I think the big focus for 2019 will be fundamentals building across our entire stack (both design and development). What made learning React easy was a strong understanding of JavaScript. Trying to avoid constantly chasing that new new!

  • @d__bailey Iโ€™m so freaking vanilla having been self-taught code only for fulfilling side hustles (i.e. HTML/CSS/jQuery-sorta/PHP-sorta). Any advice for someone maybe wanting to learn real development? Itโ€™s been a decade and Iโ€™m still getting by with StackOverflow ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • @mrdanielschwarz ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ’ป without stack overflow I think half the internet would disappear...

Recommend Wes Bosโ€™ 30 day JavaScript challenge and any of the vanilla courses on egghead.io - and even more highly recommend when you are working through a problem, try Mozilla Developer Network (MDN) docs as a starting point before stack overflow. MDN can help you build understanding of the fundamentals without jumping to solutions. All you really need to know is the type of variable you are working with (eg array, date) and then MDN is amazing at explaining what methods and properties are available.

  • @d__bailey @mrdanielschwarz haha Google and StackOverflow are vital to my code too! WesBos is awesome, I learned React and Redux from his course:

Also, if you're thinking about frameworks to learn, check out this thread from Pieter Levels. He's using PHP and JQuery from back in the day, showing you don't need to learn the latest stuff to make cool stuff!

  • @Graeme Yup this is pretty much me! ๐Ÿ˜‚

  • @d__bailey Great advice, thanks! Iโ€™ve heard of Wes Bos so Iโ€™ll certainly give that a try!

  • 2018 was a lot of reset and reinvigoration for me. I started the year pretty rocky disliking my role at a tech startup that just wasn't meshing well for me. One of the classic scenarios of a designer reporting to a marketing director, lots of micromanagement and creative woes! ๐Ÿ˜ฟ Luckily got picked up at my current role toward the summer and I'm loving it so far! ๐Ÿ™Œ

At this new role I've had to reinvest some time in brushing up on my React/JS which is always a nice brain exercise I feel. I'm hoping in the upcoming year to incorporate more of it within my prototypes and combine them with my animations to ensure a fantastic presentation experience to my dev teams. I'm also helping mentor some junior designers, so the leadership hat is always a process to take in and learn from as well! ๐Ÿ˜บ

  • @raxie Nice move, it's important to have the right fit! I wrote a bit about fitting in here actually ๐Ÿ™‚

I've also been working with React a lot, it's great! Lots of nice ways to work with prototyping tools ..e.g. @juand4v's Sketch2React, Modulz, Framer, and probably lots more!

  • @Graeme Thank you! For sure! I was just mentioning I started to play around with Sketch2React -- hoping to see what I can get out of it! I followed the alpha closely, got my team and I really interested.
