Important Update: We're Moving to Invite Only
Since launching this community side of Prototypr last month, we've had nearly 1,000 people register, well 827 at the time of writing this And this has been so much to manage and moderate for me as an indie creator!
With that, it has become necessary to slow down the growth of the forum, and improve the quality by making this area invite only.
Why invite only?
Going into the new year, I've found it necessary to take a step back and prioritise projects in a way that will enable better growth in terms of providing better service and keeping things sustainable.
I had to think about which projects are most fruitful, or which are a hard slog. The ones which produce high impact, with minimal effort should be prioritised. Here is a prioritisation grid I made on my window:
As you can see, I must focus on:
- Delivering the Prototypr weekly newsletter
- Creating some plugins that can generate revenue
- Work on UI Sounds project
Ultimately, income is important too, so I also made a table that shows the revenue potential of each project to help prioritise:
From that, I've been working from a roadmap and writing regular updates on my own process. I'll think about how I can start making that content public too:
What's next for Prototypr Makerspace
I'm going to leave this forum open for people who have any questions and have both provided and found a lot of value here. I'll continue to check in once a week at least, and will also be using it to blog my own projects.
- Make this community invite only
- Replace the announcement message about introducing yourself with a link to this post.
- Continue using and sharing in the forum
- Enable existing users to invite people
- Invite plugin developers, and people in design industry who are creating their own products
This should only take a couple hours, and I'll probably have time to do it on the weekend. Thanks again for joining, and in the coming months, I hope to see this space move up on that priority canvas.

@juand4v sounds good Juan! I think pricing is important - check out Indie Hackers, they're always sharing pricing strategies and figuring out how to make projects profitable or at least sustainable.
I'm looking into this myself, and will be making some prototyping plugins and soundpacks.

emailOtter is quite a unique product in that it actually let's you customise HTML email templates by turning them into editable modules. You can read more about what it is and why I'm making it here.
Here is my pricing roadmap:
- Free for a few invite only users for beta testing
- First few months (depending on growth), free for early adopters
- After I see it working well, I'll go freemium by make some important features paid: e.g pay to compress images, pay to export HTML, pay for more than 5 active projects etc
- Then I will add monthly plans, or like Sketch, $99 per year
That's just a rough idea, and I haven't charged for a service before so am also still learning. I think it depends on adoption too, it might be best to charge the $99 out right, or offer lifetime membership deals to early adopters like on AppSumo.
I'll be writing about how it goes anyway, I'm optimistic

I'll get this into our tools section this week! I've had the newsletter on hold since Christmas because of holidays, but I'll be starting that up again soon.
@doug how is the diabetes app going? It was a real mission to keep that programme going with everything else, but I'd like to carry on supporting projects.
I'm currently making a plan for the projects/areas to focus on myself. I'm going to write a quick update on that, and will link it back here!
UI Sounds: Sound Design Inspiration
Learn sound design for user interfaces by example
UI Sounds is a library of user interface sounds from popular apps to help you think and learn more about sound when designing and building products.
On the 30th of December, I launched a new section of Prototypr called UI Sounds over on Product Hunt and it finished #1 product of the day, which was amazing since I've never had that happen before:

Here's a bit about the project and why I started it:
Since writing about sound visualisation a few years ago (e.g. see here), I was always interested in seeing sounds, but didn't see any career-related reason to pursue the interest so I just stopped!
I want to take this chance to encourage people to make time for what you're really interested in, as it's easy to think "I'll learn about that awesome stuff later"/"that won't pay the bills". But if you think like that, you might never get to do what you really like, and eventually that area of interest will be like a shadowy ghost of what could have been.
This project is for me to start re-exploring sounds. Last year I became interested in the sounds on UI of apps, and got recorded a library, as there isn't really a place to find them all. Here is that library!
Future todo: replace the YouTube sound visualisations a Web Audio API version, and add content about this area to teach more about it. That content will be premium to fund the site! That's the rough plan for this one.
The feedback and opinions on the product have generally been very positive, and thousands of people have used the site already which is great feedback in itself:
It can't stay free
It was great to see the positive remarks around the project, but Vincent's thoughts, in particular, had me thinking about how to keep the project sustainable. The project is a free resource and being free it is very difficult to maintain.
Maybe giving out free content and work is sustainable if you have a 9-5 job that you're happy in, but for indie people like me, it's not. From my experience in the design industry, I've seen lots of freebies, and the promotion of free work for exposure.
I think this actually hurts the industry, and by not helping people sell and promote their own work keeps this cycle going. So clearly my next step is to generate revenue so the product can continue to live - or it will simply die!
My first step is to make a useful sound pack that can be used by designers and developers for both prototypes and end products. We've already started on it, check it out on Twitter:
I haven't decided on pricing yet, but any ideas will help. I'll keep this thread updated with progress.
